The reason I went to Nelson was to visit Abel Tasman National Park.
If you have never heard of the Abel Tasman then I don’t know what rock you have been hiding under.
Abel Tasman is a New Zealand national park located between Golden Bay and Tasman Bay at the top of the South Island. You can camp here, kayak and hike or even stay in little cabins which is definitely more my style. Today though my plan was the coach cruise, track package – the scenic trip!
Abel Tasman National Park is renowned for its golden beaches, sculptured granite cliffs, and world-famous Abel Tasman Coast Track. It’s stunning. You have to go.
Its true, no one ever seems to travel their own country so I brought a local Kiwi down for the trip. Hiking is always much more fun with someone to keep you motivated! Do learn from my mistakes, make sure you are at the right spot to get picked for the bus otherwise you may have to do when we did and flag a taxi from Nelson to Kaiteriteri which is not cheap at all and there is no uber here!
Anyway my day gets better after a coffee! Just as we were getting off the boat the rain stops and the sun came out which definitely changed my spirits. Nelson (apparently) has one of the highest sunshine hours in the country!
The boat drops us off at a beautiful golden beach, (photo time), then we start making tracks through the sand. The walk is unguided but you wont get lost its clearly signposted! This gives you the freedom to go at the pace you want and soak up the beauty of the Abel Tasman.
There is something so special and calming walking through nature. I loved walking bay to bay, stopping to admire the views along the way. It is definitely super relaxing and such a great place to visit.
The walk from Anchorage to Marahau should apparently take between 3-4hrs. I am a bit of a fitness fanatic so we smashed it in no time which meant the option was to wait a few hours to get collected by the coach (boring) or walk back to the start via the road and get another coffee! We also made the bus in plenty of time! 🙂
Sometimes when you are in a place so beautiful it doesn’t even feel like exercise. Next time I will come back get dropped off at a different spot and do a much longer walk. This time I did 20k and it felt like 20 minutes.
Abel Tasman National Park is stunning and totally worth the visit. The climate is mild which also means it is a good place to visit at any time of the year. I think you will love it here. Enjoy xx
