I have lived and travelled New Zealand and Australia now for almost 5 years. The time has gone so fast. I often forget I have been here for so long.
Some of the things you have to get used to here after coming from the other side of the world is that Christmas will never feel like christmas. There is no snow and the songs don’t match and relate to this side of the world at all.
Back home in the UK, christmas and winter are incredibly intertwined. Growing up back in Newcastle Christmas was the holiday that made you enjoy winter and the thought of a white Christmas was always exciting. Here, summer and christmas are 2 separate things that happen to collide. The image of Santa at a BBQ in speedos will never sound right to me and always be overshadowed by Santa in the snow.
Here in Auckland everyone tends to get forced leave for 2 weeks over that time so the city is deserted as people escape and disappear out of town for the holidays. Where as back home all the english step across the road to your local pub for christmas eve and christmas day and everyone knows your name. This just brings back memories of my local The Denton back home in geordie land.
Being a traveller it will always be different without your family and favourite traditions but you should take advantage of being here, go to the beach and wear your santa hat and embrace the kiwi / ozzie way. If you feeling alone book yourself into a hostel and you will realise everyone is in the same boat or book yourself on a day trip / road trip explore while the roads are quiet. It will be a Christmas day to remember.
Happy holidays and love to all xx
