I have lived in Auckland for just over 2 years now. One of my favourite things about this city is how great the food is. I’m not the best cook so I love eating out, especially good, healthy food. I don’t mind spending a little bit extra every now and then to have some great food.
My top 10 favourite spots to eat if you fancy some great vegetarian food:
This place is pretty much on my doorstep and it’s always busy, especially on the weekend. The food is amazing with great choices on the menu, which changes seasonally, but if you get the chance, try the side of kumara with dukka and orange. It is so good!
Kokako is a great spot to chill, read a book and soak up the busy atmosphere. I am also slightly addicted to their banana bread.
This place is a gem. You always know that when you find yoga places, you find good veggie food. Mondays is a cute, hidden cafe tucked away from the bars and the busy main road in Kingsland. Mondays has smoothies, beautiful healthy food and yummy raw treats. You won’t be able to decide what to eat.
The first time I heard about Misters was when they were making free smoothies at Fisher & Paykel Social Kitchen. I recommend the Green Smoothie and also the Nut Butter, but there are so many others to try. This place is round the corner off Queen Street and the staff are super friendly. The coffee is made with Meroto Espesso beans with a selection of homemade nut milks which are so yummy. The menu changes seasonally and the options are amazing. If you love healthy food with great flavours then this is the place.
Best Ugly Bagel
Everyone loves a bagel yeah? Totally recommend the TAB – MY favourite, tomato, avocado bagel! In winter at the City Works Depot, Ugly Bagel have the fire going and its super cute. This place gets really busy at lunch time. The staff super friendly and its cute when you order a bagel they repeat it and shout it afterwards, kinda of like a song! I discovered this place when I first arrived in NZ and keep going back. If you’re in the city you should check this place out. There is also another Ugly Bagel spot tucked away in Newmarket. One has just opened up in Wellington Airport so you get even get it there now.
Little Bird Unbakery
Raw, unprocessed, organic healthy food. Vegan and vegetarian delights. Having watched Megan May in a cooking demonstration at Fisher & Paykel Social Kitchen I am now in owe of everything she does and the way Megan just glows with all the goodness she eats. Little Bird Unbakery began the ‘unbaking’ trend in Ponsonby and nothing beats this place if you wanna walk out knowing you have eaten so well.
The Midnight Bakers
This place is new. It is on Dominion Road and is a perfect spot for brunch or an afternoon snack. I recommend you try the red velvet chai latte and the freedom loaf packed full of seeds and psyllium husks. The bread is so good and so filling. I have it on morning and it totally fills me up. The freedom loaf costs $15 dollars and it is also free of wheat, gluten*, diary, nuts, eggs, yeast and refined sugar! It is as heavy as a brick but one slice will totally fill you up compared to a loaf you buy from the supermarket so you totally get your money’s worth!
Down at Britomart is XUXU. You have probably walked pasted this place so many times without realising. There is 2 options of vegetarian dumplings here both really yummy. This bar is super cute and and sells some of the best cocktails I have ever had. You should definitely come here with a girl mate or even a date. It is a great little spot.
The vegetarian menu here is amazing. Ebisu is the best Japanese food I have ever had. It costs $65.00 dollars for the set Vegetarian Menu and you get that much food you will probably struggle but save room for the tofu and eggplant because it is so delicious.
Fancy a swanky meal out then this is the place with vegetarian section of the menu that is not just a basic pizza / pasta. The food is amazing here, It is beautifully presented, looks amazing and tastes expensive but is actually not badly priced at all and totally worth it. I highly recommend this place.
On the shore in Takapuna is a new eco friendly cafe thats you must check out. The place is modern, stylish, healthy and ORGANIC! The food is yummy, the staff are friendly and this is just my new favourite reason to go across the bridge to the shore. I tried the home made grawnola. You can even buy take home goodies and awesome raw treats as well as so many cool drinks that just make you feel instantly more healthy. Street organics sister store is in Melbourne so you can expect this place to have some character.
